Zvěd — Illustrations & Art Direction for a Children’s Science Series

Overview

Zvěd is an educational science series for children that presents research, discoveries, and complex scientific topics in an accessible and entertaining way. The project began online and later became part of Česká televize’s Déčko, where it continues as a children’s educational format. Publicly available programme pages show episodes focused on themes such as the brain, evolution, and air, alongside related digital content including the online game Zvědavý balónek. 

Challenge

The challenge was to create a visual language that could make science feel engaging for children without losing clarity or educational value. The series works with topics that are often abstract or difficult to explain visually, so the art direction had to support curiosity, understanding, and play at the same time. It also needed enough flexibility to work across multiple formats, from broadcast visuals and illustrated props to online games and recurring visual elements for different scientific themes. 

What I Did

I have been creating illustrations and visual assets for Zvěd over multiple years, shaping the series’ visual layer across different seasons and outputs. My work includes illustrations, props, and visual elements designed to support the show’s science storytelling, as well as artwork for online interactive formats such as Zvědavý balónek, a game connected to the series on Déčko. The visual approach had to remain playful and attractive for children while helping translate concepts related to the brain, evolution, air, and other scientific themes into forms that felt understandable and memorable. 

Result

The result was a long-term visual contribution to a children’s science format that combines education with curiosity and play. By supporting the series with illustrations, props, and game-related visuals, the work helped build a more engaging and recognisable world around Zvěd across television and digital platforms. The project shows how art direction and illustration can make scientific topics more inviting for young audiences without reducing their depth or sense of discovery.
